Sophomore Frances Ybarra Runs at Regional XC

SHS Competes at the Regional XC Meet

The Sundown Roughnecks and Roughettes Cross Country team competed at the UIL Region 1 XC Championship at Mae Simmons on Monday, October 25th. Out of 36 teams, only the top four teams and top ten individuals advance to the state meet.  Junior Koy Torres and sophomore Francis Ybarra advanced to State as individuals, which will be held in Round Rock on Saturday, November 6th. 

Notable Finishes:

Varsity Girls - 2 miles

State Qualifier Francis Ybarra - 10th (13:10)

Natalie Urias- 30th (13:50)

Ryann Quintanilla- 37th (14:05)

Rounding out the team was Scarlet Lopez with a time of 14:42 and Julia Posadas, at 16:36.

Varsity Boys - 3 miles

Koy Torres- 17th (18:53)

Branson Sanders- 21st (missing the qualifying spot by .7 seconds)

Watson Evans- 30th (19:43)

Other team members included Mathias Salgado (22:25), Zayden Lopez (22:32), Edgar Mendoza (22:44), and Jordan Pena (25:04).

As Koy Torres thinks about the state meet in two weeks he stated his goal, “I would like for my time to improve at Round Rock.”

Coach Kerry Gleason expressed his thoughts on the Regional meet and season, “We are so proud of these kids and their efforts this season, despite numerous setbacks and freak injuries. Sundown XC consistently shines as the example of hard work and dedication, and these young athletes continued that tradition with honor and dignity.”
