Proud to be a Roughneck! Jaelin Wylie finished 10th and Ariel Hernandez finished 15th at the Girls State Powerlifting Meet today in Frisco! They have had a great season, and capped it off today with great effort and determination! The State Meet is the biggest platform that these student athletes can compete. It is the culmination of a grueling season with sore muscles, and more failed attempts than successes. The goal is to overcome the challenge of moving heavy weight, coming up short, and having to face the weight again! It is up to these athletes to lift the weight of their choosing as they are only encouraged by their coaches, teammates, friends and family... but it is up to them to move the weight! These 3 lifts of squat, bench and deadlift are very technical lifts and require hours upon hours of training. They get 1 attempt at each of the 3 weights they choose per lift, and have to be strategic to compete with the other qualifiers. Luckily for us, we have some of the best in the business to set our students up for success. Coach Barry Newton and Coach Sarah Goodman have done a great job providing these young ladies all the necessary tools to be successful. Today was a bitter sweet ending to our season, but we couldn't be prouder of or Roughettes! Jaelin and Ariel represented the red, white and blue well today! A great season for 2 individuals with a lot of heart and determination! There ain't nothing better than being a Sundown Roughneck!

36th Consecutive UIL Sweepstakes for the Pride of the Oil Patch!!! The Roughneck Band performed Thursday in the Region 16 UIL Concert and Sightreading Evaluation. With first division ratings from all 6 judges, along with the first division from the marching season, the band completed the 36th consecutive UIL Sweepstakes for Sundown High School! And wow…they did so in style! They showcased both their technical skill, musical maturity, and endurance with an extremely challenging, fun, and exciting program. These students are so talented in so many ways! Many of them changed out of their band uniform and sprinted away to a track meet, and some to The Facility for the Regional Powerlifting Meet, while others helped us run the rest of the 13-hour event, plus clean-up afterward! We are very thankful to these students for their time, their efforts, their talents, and for being some of the very best kids in the whole world. Thanks so much to Ashley Blount, Angela Greenhaw, Martha Sue Lusk, Mike Glaze, Zach Munoz, Amber Mauldin, and Chris Wheeler for managing the different areas of the event today. And thanks to our 6th and 7th graders who also helped run this event…they were nothing short of fantastic! It was a very smooth and successful day all around! It takes a village, and ours is the absolute best. Also a special thanks to Mr. Justin Mauldin for organizing this event... as well as preparing our Band for the opportunity to continue as one of our strongest traditions in Sundown.... the Sundown Roughneck Band!

The Sundown Girls Powerlifting Team competed at the Regional Powerlifting Meet held this past Friday in Shamrock, TX. The Roughette Team took 7 Individuals to the meet, and had 2 qualify for the State Meet to be held on March 15th in Frisco, TX! Coach Barry Newton and Coach Sarah Goodman had a great season, and will have the opportunity to coach these young ladies one more time at the state meet! The 2 state qualifying lifters were Jaelin Wylie and Ariel Hernandez. Both Jaelin and Ariel managed to hit a qualifying total in their respective weight classes to qualify for the State Meet. Jaelin had a 625 lb total to reach and had to deadlift 20 pounds over her maximum deadlift to qualify, which she managed to pull with ease! Ariel was in the same position and had to pull 40 pounds over her maximum deadlift to qualify, and she also managed to pull it off! It was quite the experience for these young ladies and their families! An experience they will remember for years to come! State Qualifiers Ariel Hernandez - 4th Place - (235 lb Squat - 140 Bench - 300 lb Deadlift - 675 lb total) - State Qualifier | Outstanding Deadlift - Light Platform Jaelin Wylie - 5th Place - (230 lb Squat - 135 Bench - 260 lb Deadlift - 625 lb total) - State Qualifier We are also proud of our 5 regional qualifiers that have lifted in their last meet for the 2023 Season! They had a great season filled with ups and downs, and learned so much about themselves throughout the course of the season! They learned how strong they are... not only physically but mentally as well! They cheered each other on throughout the course of the season and made us proud to be a fellow Sundown Roughneck and Roughette! Regional Qualifiers Roxanna Mendoza - 6th Place - (235 lb Squat - 140 Bench - 255 lb Deadlift - 630 lb total) Mariah Stephens - 9th Place - (235 lb Squat - 120 Bench - 240 lb Deadlift - 595 lb total) Autum Olivas - 8th Place - (335 lb Squat - 135 Bench - 300 lb Deadlift - 770 lb total) Armani Hernandez - 9th Place - (270 lb Squat - 155 Bench - 245 lb Deadlift - 670 lb total) Koii Scott - 8th Place - (205 lb Squat - 150 Bench - 260 lb Deadlift - 615 lb total)
